Frequently Asked Questions
Why tele-psychiatry?
Patients can seek care for their mental health with comfort and convenience, at a time and place that is comfortable for them (as long as it is in the appropriate states). This eliminates the need for long commutes, and potential uncomfortable times in waiting rooms. Telepsychiatry also allows more privacy and helps patients develop a one-on-one experience with their doctor. Using both audio-video technology allows for adequate psychiatric assessments in most situations. If patients require face-to-face encounters or a higher level of care for their condition, their doctor will inform them and help refer them to the proper resources. Research supports that telepsychiatry is just as effective as face-to-face visits and improves access to care. See this linked research article.
Do you prescribe medications?
Yes, medications would be prescribed when appropriate. Patients will understand that medicine is only one aspect of their care, and that therapy plays a larger role to improve symptoms. The benefit of seeing a psychiatrist is that you can benefit from both therapy and be prescribed medications when necessary.
There is one exception to this: the practice does not prescribe controlled substances, which includes stimulants (e.g. Adderall and Ritalin), benzodiazepines (e.g. Xanax and Klonopin), and some sleep medications (e.g. Ambien and Lunesta). Nevertheless, if a controlled substance is medically indicated, your doctor will say so and may be able to suggest alternative options to have it prescribed (e.g. by working with your primary care provider).
Do you take insurance?
Like many private psychiatry practices, we are not in-network with insurance carriers. Patients are expected to pay the fee schedule as agreed upon at the time of each appointment. New patients will be required to provide valid payment details when scheduling their initial evaluation. These payment details are kept secured. Payment for services are due at the time of the appointment, or the card on file will be charged at the time of service.
Patients are able to pay using their Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA).
The practice can provide a “Superbill” for any visits which can allow patients to claim reimbursement from their insurance company if they have out-of-network benefits. While the practice can provide documentation for billing, patients are entirely responsible for submitting this claim. Patients may call their insurance company prior to their visits to clarify or confirm their coverage benefits.
